A combined 70 years of service was acknowledged last week when the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team made presentations to four of its volunteers.
At the charity’s annual general meeting, held in Newcastle, Clive Coffey received a 30-year long service award, while Mark Hanna was honoured for his 20 years of service. Ten-year awards were also presented to Joan McKeever and Ronan Davidson Kernan.
During the evening, another “busy and impactful” year of service was outlined, with the Newcastle-based charity’s assistance routinely called upon. Reports highlighted three key themes: the growing demand for the team’s help in the Mournes; appreciation for the continued support from the community and partner organisations; and recognition of the exceptional commitment shown by the rescue team’s volunteer members.
Team members and supporters in attendance also heard that, alongside rescue operations, the team continues to play an important role in promoting mountain safety and education — helping visitors and locals alike to enjoy the mountains responsibly and safely.
The evening concluded with an update on the development of the team’s new base, which is currently under construction and was described on the night as “a vital step in supporting our future operations and training.”
