The Mourne Observer will publish the first Down Recorder edition on Wednesday.

From Wednesday February 4, the Mourne Observer will publish a Down Recorder edition for those living in Downpatrick and surrounding areas.

Mourne Observer Editor Stephen Patton said; “A lot of people were sad to learn of the closure of the Down Recorder, a cherished part of the community for almost 190 years.

“We were sorry too. We share the Down Recorder’s values, that unyielding commitment to keeping local people up to date with all that is happening in the places where they live.

“And because of our shared passion for local news, we are determined to do all we can to continue the Down Recorder’s proud legacy.

“That is why we are embarking on this new chapter.

“We know so many people looked forward to picking up their Recorder each week and we want to ensure they continue to have a trusted source of local news.

“While as an edition of the Mourne Observer it won’t look exactly like the Down Recorder did before its closure, there will be lots of content that readers enjoyed seeing in the paper over the years, in addition to all of the usual weekly news that appears in the Mourne Observer.

“And we need your help – if you sent news and sports items and photographs to the Down Recorder, we’d love it if you shared your news with us in our new edition, as well as your family announcements and please get in touch too for all your business advertising requirements.”
