A new era beckons for Mourne Heritage Trust as it welcomes Nigel McKinney as its new Chief Executive, succeeding Martin Carey, who has held the role since 2006.

Nigel brings to the organisation extensive experience in the community and voluntary sector, having spent his entire career of more than 30 years to date working for community organisations across Northern Ireland, including more than a decade for a grant-making charitable trust.

A native of Enniskillen, Nigel has been living with his family in the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for more than 20 years. With an academic background in environmental sciences, he has most recently been working as an independent consultant, undertaking assignments for environmental organisations including NI Environment Link and Landscapes NI, as well as for a wide range of charities and other not-for-profit bodies, including County Down Rural Community Network.

Nigel has been very active within the local community and is a founding member of the Dolmens Climate Action Network. He is a longstanding and regular recreational user of the outdoors of the Mourne AONB, through walking, cycling and running, and completed GeoAmbassador training.

Welcoming the appointment, Trust Chairman David Maginn commented: “After an exhaustive recruitment process, I have no doubt Nigel will bring considerable commitment and energy to Mourne Heritage Trust, as well as a wealth of relevant experience.”
