A SPECIAL strategic group that will “drive a more joined-up approach to the sustainable management of the Mournes landscape” has been established.
Last Thursday, Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Andrew Muir confirmed the formation of the NI Government Mournes Strategic Group, which he will chair.
In a statement, he said that the body will “bring together key government departments, agencies, councils and delivery partners” and will “provide leadership and coordination across government and partner organisations in the Mournes”.
The minister acknowledged that the region is “facing increasing and complex pressures that must be effectively addressed if we are to protect the natural beauty of the area, whilst ensuring a thriving future for the local communities in the Mournes”.
“Through the establishment of this strategic group, we are putting in place the leadership and coordination needed to respond to existing and emerging pressures,” he added.
South Down Alliance MLA Andrew McMurray voiced his delight at the establishment of “this high-level group”.
“This move reflects the minister’s recognition of the significance of this special place to the people who work and live in the area and to the many people across Northern Ireland who value this treasured landscape,” he said.
