Niall Donnan is bidding to climb to the top of a local mountain 101 times in 100 days. The Newcastle man has entered the second week of his remarkable charity challenge. He has a true appreciation for the mountains that form the beautiful backdrop to his hometown, and it’s matched by his respect for an essential medical emergency service which works across the province.

Niall decided to undertake his challenge to raise money for the Air Ambulance. He embarked on it last Monday (14 July) and will, if all goes to plan, conclude it on 18 October. His planned daily ascents include peaks such as Slieve Donard, Commedagh, Slieve Lamagan, Millstone, Thomas, and Doan. His ambitious goal is to raise £16,000 for the emergency helicopter service.

The 23-year-old local man has been told he may be the first person to take on this 100-day challenge in the Mournes. He knows it will be tough, both physically and mentally, to complete it, but added that he wants to raise as much as he can for the Air Ambulance. Describing the service as “a fantastic charity,” Niall said countless people owe their lives to the helicopter and its skilled crew members who “can be the difference between life and death.”

Adding that he is “highly motivated” to complete his challenge, Niall said he is “very appreciative” of those who have already kindly donated via the JustGiving page.

You can also support Niall’s fundraising by leaving a donation in the collection box at McCann’s Fish and Chip Shop on Railway Street in Newcastle.
