Netball NI Senior League 5

Newcastle 49 Phoenix 13

NEWCASTLE Netball Club’s senior side faced Phoenix on Sunday in their final game before the Christmas break.

Having played Phoenix just a few weeks ago, Newcastle knew they were in for a challenging match. Coming off a tough game on Monday night, there were some tired legs in the squad, but the team was determined to rise to the occasion.

With strength on the bench and a clear game plan, Newcastle aimed to start strong and sustain high intensity throughout the game.

From the outset, Newcastle showcased their determination and cohesion, looking to make the most of their last game before the holiday break.

Quarter one

Newcastle began the game with purpose, establishing an early lead.

Clare set the tone with an outstanding performance as goal keeper, disrupting Phoenix’s attack and making crucial interceptions.

Erin provided excellent support in goal defence, and Aine’s agility in wing defence stifled Phoenix’s midcourt play.

Kitty’s control in the center ensured a smooth transition into attack, with Christine feeding the circle effectively from wing attack.

Nicola and Louise worked well together in the shooting circle, capitalising on their opportunities.

The first quarter ended with Newcastle leading 10-5.

Quarter two

In the second quarter, Newcastle turned up the intensity. The defensive unit of Clare, Erin, and Aine continued to dominate, making it incredibly difficult for Phoenix to find their rhythm.

Newcastle’s midcourt, led by Kitty, drove the play with precision, while Christine’s sharp feeds kept the shooters well-supplied.

Nicola and Louise were clinical in front of goal, helping Newcastle extend their lead significantly. By halftime, Newcastle had surged ahead 29-8, putting them firmly in control of the game.

Quarter three

Newcastle made a few tactical changes in the third quarter, bringing Alejandra into wing defence and Karen into wing attack, while Lynsey joined Louise in the shooting circle.

The adjustments worked seamlessly, with Alejandra adding fresh energy to the defensive effort and Lynsey making an immediate impact in attack. Karen’s accurate feeds and movement complemented Kitty’s consistent play in center.

Despite Phoenix’s efforts, Newcastle continued to dominate, ending the quarter with a commanding 38-11 lead.

Quarter four

The final quarter saw Newcastle finish the game in style.

Clare, who had been a standout all game, maintained her relentless defensive performance, making interception after interception and disrupting Phoenix’s attacking plays.

Erin and Alejandra supported her brilliantly, ensuring Phoenix struggled to find scoring opportunities.

In attack, Nicola returned to goal attack alongside Lynsey, and the duo worked effectively to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Kitty and Karen continued to drive play through the midcourt, ensuring Newcastle maintained their high intensity until the final whistle.

The game concluded with an emphatic 49-13 victory for Newcastle.

Player of the Match

Clare was deservedly named Player of the Match for her outstanding and relentless performance in the goal keeper position.

Her ability to read the game, make crucial interceptions, and disrupt Phoenix’s attacking flow was instrumental in Newcastle’s dominant display.

This was an excellent performance from Newcastle, showcasing teamwork, energy, and tenacity.

The squad can now head into the Christmas break proud of their efforts and ready to build on their momentum in the new year.
