The final game of the day on Sunday brought a tough challenge for the Newcastle Blacks senior team as they faced a strong Clann Éireann side. With a squad featuring Aine McDonald, Aisling Burns, Catherine Burns, Christine Owens, Clare Toner, Kelly Duffin, Lauren McCabe, and Louise McCabe, Newcastle stepped onto the court determined to shake off the frustration of last week’s narrow defeat and return to winning ways.

However, it was Clann Éireann who made the brighter start. Showing sharp movement and confidence from the first whistle, they claimed the opening two goals and applied early pressure to Newcastle’s defense. But Newcastle, not a squad to panic under pressure, quickly settled. With some lovely passages of play, quick footwork, and accurate, well-timed passing, the Blacks found their rhythm. Their shooters capitalized on every opportunity, and their defensive unit slowed Clann Éireann’s attack effectively.

By the end of the first quarter, Newcastle had swung the momentum firmly in their favour, leading 8-5. Newcastle opted to keep the same seven on court for the second quarter, a decision that paid off. Although some frantic moments allowed Clann Éireann to add five more goals to their tally, Newcastle remained composed. Their patience in possession, strong drives onto the ball, and disciplined defensive work ensured they controlled the pace of the quarter. The scoreboard reflected their dominance, with Newcastle taking a strong 22-10 lead into half-time.

The third quarter presented new challenges. Clann Éireann came out with renewed determination, disrupting Newcastle’s flow. Slight timing mismatches and a few missed feeds made it harder for Newcastle to deliver clean ball into their shooters. Clann Éireann’s pressure paid off as they edged the quarter, capitalizing on turnovers and forcing Newcastle to work harder for every goal.

Despite the dip in momentum for the Blacks, their earlier hard work had created enough of a cushion. They still held a comfortable overall lead of 28-18 heading into the final 15 minutes. With the game far from over, Newcastle knew a strong finish was required to secure the result.

The team stepped up their intensity in the final quarter, pushing for every loose ball and tightening their defensive structure. Although it proved to be a low-scoring quarter for both sides, Newcastle’s work rate ensured their opponents never got close enough to threaten the result. Newcastle’s determination, smart decision-making, and control under pressure carried them over the line, sealing a well-earned 36-23 victory.

Player of the Match went to Clare Toner, who delivered an outstanding performance in the shooting circle. In a space that was often congested and difficult to navigate, she demonstrated excellent movement, accurate shooting, and a calm presence that helped settle the team during crucial moments. Her impact was vital in securing the win.

A strong, disciplined performance and a deserved victory for the Blacks.
