There is concern about scramblers “being driven recklessly” in residential areas of Newcastle.
In a statement about the issue, local SDLP representatives Colin McGrath MLA and Cllr Laura Devlin said they had been contacted by people living near green spaces “where scramblers are regularly being driven recklessly, causing significant noise, disruption and antisocial behaviour.”
They added this most often occurs in the evenings and at weekends.
“Residents should not have to endure constant disturbance in their own community or feel unsafe using local green spaces because of the reckless use of scramblers and off-road bikes,” said Mr McGrath.
“People have contacted us deeply concerned about the level of disruption being caused, but also about the very real safety risks involved.
“These bikes are often being driven at speed in open areas used by families, walkers and people out with their dogs.
“Given the tragic incidents and widespread public concern linked to scramblers in recent years, it is completely understandable that local residents are worried somebody could be seriously hurt if action is not taken.”
Cllr Devlin said residents deserve to feel safe.
“We will be raising these concerns directly with the PSNI, council enforcement officers and any relevant landowners to ensure this issue is properly investigated and addressed,” added Cllr Devlin.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own area and to enjoy shared public spaces without intimidation, fear or ongoing antisocial behaviour.
“We would encourage anyone witnessing dangerous or reckless behaviour to report it through the appropriate channels so that there is a clear record of the problem.”
