The senior Pinks team faced Carrick IIs in the NI Netball Senior Shield, meeting once again after what had been a particularly tough and physical encounter during their previous league fixture.

That earlier match had been a challenging one for Newcastle, so this game provided the team with an opportunity to regroup, refocus, and show the improvements they have been working hard to implement in training. Heading into the match, the Pinks knew they would have to adapt, with a number of key squad members unavailable.

However, the strength of the Newcastle setup is always in the collective effort of the squad, and the players who stepped onto the court were determined to give a strong account of themselves.

From the first whistle, Newcastle approached the game with a calm and controlled mindset. Rather than being drawn into the physicality that had characterised previous meetings between the two sides, the Pinks focused on playing their own structured game.

Patient ball movement through the midcourt, combined with disciplined defensive pressure, allowed Newcastle to stay competitive throughout the opening quarter. Carrick showed why they are a strong side, applying pressure across the court and looking to capitalise on any turnover opportunities.

However, Newcastle’s defence worked tirelessly to disrupt attacking plays and force errors. The defensive unit showed excellent communication and timing, contesting every ball and refusing to allow Carrick to build any significant momentum.

The attacking unit moved well, creating space and delivering accurate feeds into the circle. The shooters showed great concentration, converting opportunities and ensuring Newcastle remained within touching distance on the scoreboard.

As the game progressed, the intensity increased. Carrick pushed hard to stretch their lead, but Newcastle continued to respond with determination.

Every loose ball was contested, every centre pass fought for, and the Pinks remained fully committed to keeping the game tight.

Despite a controlled and disciplined performance from Newcastle, Carrick ultimately managed to edge ahead in the closing stages.

Their experience in key moments allowed them to secure the win, but the final scoreline did not fully reflect the effort and quality shown by the Newcastle side throughout the match. While the result did not fall Newcastle’s way on the day, the performance was a positive one.

The team demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and strong teamwork in the face of adversity. Importantly, Newcastle still progress to the quarter-final of the Shield competition, which will take place on Sunday 22 March.
