Vikki Methven has been included in the New Year Honours list for her work with the NSPCC.

A LOCAL volunteer has been included in the King’s New Year Honours list in recognition of her work with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). Vikki Methven, from Newcastle, is the District Committee Chairperson and has been involved with the NSPCC in Northern Ireland for over 60 years. She is being recognised for voluntary service to the NSPCC and to the community in Newcastle. The former Newcastle Primary School teacher is named on the list of Medallists of the Order of the British Empire.

NSPCC Northern Ireland Community Fundraising Manager, Susan Smith, said: “Here at NSPCC Northern Ireland, we are delighted that our wonderful Newcastle District Committee Chairperson, Vikki Methven, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for voluntary service to the NSPCC and to the community in Newcastle, County Down. Vikki has been a volunteer and supporter of NSPCC Northern Ireland since 1964, and for more than 60 years has tirelessly dedicated her time to help protect generations of children and young people from abuse. A passion to help keep children safe is at the forefront of everything she does and to date the Committee, led by Vikki, has raised an astonishing £115,954.27 through a huge variety of events including coffee mornings, mountain hikes, putting collection cans out in the local community, craft fairs and many more.

“In 2003, Vikki became further involved with NSPCC NI and became a volunteer with our Young Witness Service (YWS), providing advice and support to children and young people who had to go through the very difficult experience of giving evidence in criminal court cases. Vikki was a very encouraging and reassuring figure with the children and families she worked with and injected a welcome element of fun to the role, making everyone feel at ease.

“What a phenomenal impact Vikki has made to the lives of children and young people in need of help. NSPCC NI is exceptionally lucky to have her as a supporter and volunteer, and we congratulate her on this very well-deserved recognition.”
