THE asking price for Newcastle’s old railway station building, formerly the home of the town’s Lidl store, has fallen by £300,000.

In January 2025, the Railway Street property was advertised as being up for sale by estate agents Osborne King, who, in a brochure for the 1.1-acre site, stated that they had ‘been instructed to seek offers over £1,950,000 exclusive’.

However, an updated sales document published by Savills – which confirmed its acquisition of Osborne King in April 2025 – highlights that offers of £1,650,000 are now being sought for the ‘redevelopment opportunity’.

“The property comprises a former red brick Victorian railway station building, built in c. 1905, with a central three-storey tower between two single-storey pitched roof properties, one of which was a former public house,” it reads.

“The tower has a B1 Listing.

“To the rear, the property has been extended, providing a large modern single-storey extension with a pitched cladded roof over.

“Service access to the property is via the rear car park.

“The property benefits from its own secure car parking, providing spaces for approximately 65 cars on a site of c. 1.1 acres.”

The Historical Buildings Database, maintained by the Department for Communities, notes that the tower, listed in 1977, was “built as the entrance centrepiece of a railway station by 1905” and possesses a “toytown”-like appearance that is “out of proportion with the rest of the building”.

It also points out that “there have been considerable alterations to the façade” of the property over the years.
