A LOCAL MLA has voiced concern that less than one –third of the trees in Donard Wood are native species.
Colin McGrath said he was ‘quite shocked’ when informed of the make- up of the wood.
He added that this matters because native tress have an important role to play in protecting the planet and the face of climate change.
“For many people in Newcastle, Donard Wood is their entry to accessing Slieve Donard and the Mournes,” Mr McGrath said.
“However, we simply cannot plant trees for the sake of it.”
In the full story, Mr McGrath goes on to explain how he has addressed this matter.
