Almost £615,000 in compensation claims for pothole damage to vehicles was paid out in this district in the last financial year.
Figures, recently highlighted by insurance comparison website CompareNI.com, illustrated that a total of £614,615 was awarded to drivers in Newry, Mourne and Down over the 12-month period. This was further broken down by areas monitored by the two Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads Section Offices in the district, with £239,493 being paid out in the eastern portion and £375,122 in the western part.
Only Belfast (£1,182,386) and Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon (£1,075,962) recorded higher levels of pothole compensation claims. The lowest payout – £41,283 – was in Derry and Strabane, whilst the total compensation across Northern Ireland amounted to £5,130,501.
A CompareNI.com statement said that “potholes continue to present a significant issue for NI motorists, accounting for 80 per cent of all claims received by DfI last year.”
