A SPECIAL Bloomsday event in Rostrevor will see actor Maggie Shevlin perform as ‘Plurabelles’ in what promises to be a sparkling one-woman theatre performance.
This ‘mindful theatre’ event takes place at The Rostrevor Inn on Tuesday, 16 June, at 7.30pm.
‘Plurabelles’ is a dramatic evocation of ‘the Woman’ in the work of James Joyce.
To celebrate Joyce’s language, the narrative is river-like, containing myriad currents that convey the diverse facets of this ‘textual woman’.
Drawn from every area of Joyce’s writing, the words construct a portrait that shows her at all stages of her life, so that she becomes ‘Everywoman’. The single voice becomes many voices in a poetic logic that interconnects the River of Words.
‘Plurabelles’ was created directly from Joyce’s work by Joyce scholar and university lecturer Paul Sheehan specifically for actor Maggie Shevlin to perform. All of the dialogue in ‘Plurabelles’ is Joyce’s own.
In her early career, Maggie Shevlin wrote and presented children’s television programmes and has appeared in many theatre, radio and television productions, including Coronation Street, Harry’s Game, A Safe House, Inspector Morse and A Touch of Frost.
Her play Cheatin’ Heart for the BBC Radio 4 made Pick of the Week and Pick of the Year.
Maggie is also a clinical hypnotherapist and mindfulness practitioner. She has performed ‘Plurabelles’ in London and at the Edinburgh Festival.
Musician Eithne Hannigan generously volunteered to compose and record the show’s evocative accompanying music after seeing an early production of ‘Plurabelles’.

The performance starts at 7.30pm and doors close at 7.15pm. Tickets are £10 and are available online from Ticket Tailor and from Crawford’s Bar, Rostrevor.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Dua Ahmed Family Reunion in Ireland Fund.
Dua Ahmed is a Gaza-born schoolteacher who spoke at a recent event in Rostrevor. She is studying at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick for a Master’s degree focusing on traumatised children and has recently been granted refugee status in Ireland.
For the last two years, she has been separated from her children and husband, who remain in Gaza. She continues her efforts to reunite her family in Ireland.
The Family Reunion Ireland Fund aims to provide practical support to help Dua achieve her goal of bringing her family to safety and reuniting them in Ireland.
