RGU DOWNPATRICK are committed to ‘keeping Bryansford and Saul honest’ in the final five games of the Division Two All County Football League campaign.

That’s the promise from their manager Kevin Duffin, who provided an update of how the club’s senior footballers are faring this season.

After 13 games played, RGU are in third place in Division Two on 19 points, three points behind joint leaders Saul and Bryansford. The latter two sides are in the automatic promotion spots, where Kevin Duffin would like to be.

“We will do as much as we can in the league and keep Bryansford and Saul honest in the run in,” Kevin said.

“We are sitting third and Saul and Bryansford look pretty composed and solid but all we can do is push them all the way.

“We have to keep working and see what happens towards the end of the year in terms of league promotion.”

This is Kevin Duffin’s first season in charge of RGU Downpatrick. He takes them along with Collie McCrickard. The pair had managed Loughinisland for a few seasons.

He said this first year with RGU has had its challenges.

“It has been difficult. We started the season with a lot of injuries and a lot of absentees for various reasons. So it has been a bit topsy turvy and there is a bit of work to be done.”

Their first three games saw them come away with just four points. Their only win was a victory over St John’s. After losing to Longstone, they went on a run of five wins, including a victory over Bryansford. But they lost to Saul in late June.

“They look like they deserve to be a Division One team more than we do at the minute,” Kevin pointed out.

In the full article Kevin explains why Downpatrick are not where they should be but how they are on the right course to return to the top.
