‘THE Stolen Child’ is the luminous lead single from Bróna McVittie’s forthcoming album, ‘Supernatural’, which is due for release later this year. The album is a companion to Bróna’s recently published book, ‘A Way with the Fairies’, a richly woven folklore anthology exploring Irish fairy lore alongside mythic tales from across Europe. The track offers the first glimpse into what promises to be her most ambitious and immersive project to date.
Bróna has carved out a unique space in contemporary folk music. A trained biologist and lifelong lover of mythology, she is known for blending traditional song with nature-infused lyricism and shimmering experimental soundscapes. It’s an approach that was praised by The Guardian for its ability to “take you on its wing and give you fresh visions.”
Her previous albums, ‘We Are the Wildlife’ (2018), ‘The Man in the Mountain’ (2020), and ‘The Woman in the Moon’ (2022), established her as a pioneer of cosmic folk, earning acclaim from MOJO, Uncut, The Independent, and BBC Radio. The Rostrevor singer-songwriter and harpist has performed at WOMAD, Celtic Connections, the National Concert Hall Dublin, Kings Place London, and festivals across the UK and Ireland.
‘The Stolen Child’ is her ethereal reimagining of W.B. Yeats’ beloved 1886 poem, a work long cherished in her own family. “It has always been a favourite in our household,” Bróna said. “To me, it perfectly captures the essence of the fairy world and invites you to step into its mystery. Anyone who has visited Sligo will be familiar with the landscape’s deeply mystical atmosphere. I carried the first two verses of this poem close to my heart while composing the music for my version of ‘The Stolen Child’.”
The single acts as a gateway into the wider world of the forthcoming album ‘Supernatural’, inviting listeners to cross the threshold between the everyday and the otherworldly. Arriving this autumn to coincide with Samhain, the ancient Irish festival when the veil between worlds grows thin, ‘Supernatural’ will be McVittie’s fourth solo album and her boldest artistic statement yet. The record explores the mythic imagination of Ireland and beyond, standing at the meeting point of folklore, contemporary sound art, ancestral memory, and modern storytelling.
Produced by Thomas Gandey, an English electronic music producer, composer, vocalist, and keyboardist also known for his work under the Cagedbaby moniker, ‘Supernatural’ is conceived as a companion to Bróna’s illustrated folklore anthology ‘A Way with the Fairies’. Each track mirrors a tale from the book, reimagining myths, poems, and folk narratives through her distinctive blend of harp, guitar, ethnic instrumentation, and experimental electronics.
It also features three international guest artists: flamenco guitarist Antonia Jiménez (Spain), bandurist Anastasiya Voytyuk (Ukraine), and vocalist-composer Jausmë (Lithuania), each contributing to a single track and expanding the album’s reach across Europe’s storytelling traditions.
