LGFA Senior Championship – Group One R3
Saul 3-5 Rostrevor 2-8
Last Thursday’s draw between Saul and Rostrevor means the latter side are heading for a semi-final, while the former now face the very real proposition of returning to intermediate football next year.
Saul manager Ryan O’Gorman said that while the result was fair, he and his players were left wondering what might have been.
“Coming into the game, both Rostrevor and ourselves had a chance of either reaching the semi-finals or being in a relegation play-off. We were four up and couldn’t see it out. They pegged us back. A draw was probably a fair result, but we were disappointed to draw after being four up.”
Rostrevor had beaten Kilcoo in their first game, then lost to Bredagh. But as Kilcoo lost to Bredagh, both Rostrevor and Saul needed to win in order to progress. That led to an entertaining display, according to the Saul manager.
“It was a good game of football from both sides,” Ryan said. “It was end to end and that suited us. There was a strong wind and Rostrevor played against it. We didn’t build up a strong enough lead and then they pegged us back.”
While Rostrevor prepare for their semi-final, Saul must get ready for Sunday’s clash with Downpatrick (Teconnaught, 4.30pm). The winner stays in the senior championship, while the loser goes to intermediate next year.
Ryan goes on to explain why there will be extra spice to this match.
