Local SDLP representatives have expressed frustration at ministerial correspondence that they say “sidesteps responsibility for dog control” at Downpatrick’s Quoile Nature Reserve.
South Down MLA Colin McGrath and town councillor Conor Galbraith previously raised concerns “about dogs being routinely let off leads at the popular nature reserve”, which they highlighted has “clear signage” indicating it is managed by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA).
In a written Assembly question, the local MLA asked DAERA Minister Andrew Muir “whether additional signage advising dog owners to keep their pets on a lead can be installed at the Quoile Nature Reserve”.
In his response, Mr Muir wrote: “My officials advise that issues related to dog control remain a matter for local council to enforce under provision of the Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983, which requires that dogs remain under control. In line with this legislative requirement, it is expected that those visiting nature reserves do so in a responsible manner and signage is provided as part of overall visitor information when visiting such sites. Where specific additional signage is required in respect of dog control issues, I would advise that this is brought to the attention of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration and action as appropriate.”
