Applications are open for full-time courses at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) – Northern Ireland’s top-performing college – and one Castlewellan student says it’s proved the right choice to unlock her future.

Amy Carroll, is studying a Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at SERC’s Downpatrick Campus.

Amy says “I didn’t want to stay on at school after my GCSEs and was ready to move on.   I had studied health and social care at school and considered pursuing that, but I also had an interest in Beauty Therapy.  My sister works in the industry and had also studied at SERC and recommended it. When I came to the open day and saw the facilities and met the tutors, that helped me make up my mind to come to SERC.

“I enjoy the course, especially all the practical experience. We also get to practise in the salon in the college where students, staff and the public book in for appointments.”

The structure of the course reflects the SERC approach to learning. Amy says

“We study each area, practice, and then follow through with assignments so it is a great way to learn, and you are building on your skills all the time.   The tutors are all lovely and it is all about being professional from the moment you walk in the door – from your own presentation and communication with clients, and of course this all goes to build up your confidence, ready to work in your chosen industry. I plan to go on to the Level 3 in Beauty Therapy at the college, to gain a thorough grounding before seeking full time work in the industry.”

SERC offers a broad range of full-time courses for anyone from post-GCSE right up to degree level. Students learn from qualified, industry-experienced tutors in state-of-the-art facilities including salons, computer suites, workshops and training kitchens. Most courses include work placements, and in many cases, there is the opportunity to travel abroad for work experience and study.

Applications for full-time courses starting in September are open now and potential students can apply directly through the college website: www.serc.ac.uk
