ON the14th of July Shimna Wheelers held its annual Cycle Sportive.
‘ The Shimna Challenge’ is a tough event of around 50 miles and nearly 4000ft of climbing, taking in many of the steepest and iconic climbs in the Mourne area, not least the final climb of the day which is the Spelga pass heading up through the steep S bend section.
The event was well supported by many cycling clubs both local and further afield with the changeable weather of late we were lucky to get such a beautiful day and near perfect cycling conditions.
This year’s event was in support of Mourne Mountain Rescue and The Pantry Food Bank, two local and well deserving charities.
The club would like to thank Bryansford GAA for the use of their clubhouse for sign on parking and refreshments after.
A thank you to Hales Fruit and Veg for the bananas at the food stop in Burren half-way round.
Thanks also to all club members who did all the heavy lifting of admin, catering, road marking, sandwich making. etc, who year on year make it all happen.
Thanks to all who supported the event and look forward to seeing you next year.
