Silent Valley safety appeal

NI Water is appealing to visitors to stay away from part of one of the trails at Silent Valley, which has been closed for safety reasons.

It has added that a “large land slippage on a portion of the Lower Loop trail has created a significant safety hazard”.

As a result, the affected area has been closed.

NI Water is appealing to the public to adhere to the signage and barriers erected around the affected area.

It has added that repairing the trail is likely to be costly and the route could be closed “for some time”.

“Although the Upper Loop trail is still accessible, fencing has been erected to prevent access to the damaged area,” explained a spokesperson for NI Water.

“The area is being closely monitored to identify further slippages. Repairs will be significant and costly due to challenging ground conditions and limited accessibility; therefore, the route may be closed for some time until a solution is identified.

“The safety of visitors is paramount and extensive fencing and signage has been erected to prevent unauthorised access to the area.

“The Lower Loop nature trail can still be partially accessed but only up to the fencing.

“NI Water thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as we consider a permanent solution to the issue.

“The Silent Valley Dam and Ben Crom Reservoir are both open and accessible to the public as usual, as are other trails in the park.”
