Newcastle golfer Simon Thornton has celebrated winning the PGA of Ireland’s Order of Merit for 2025 after an exceptional season. This week, Simon picked up his trophy, a piece of Galway Crystal, for what was his third Order of Merit title since 2015.

To capture the title this year, Simon won five times on the tour, as well as winning the Irish PGA Championship. Those wins and places earned him a total of over 35,000 points, and he led Cormac Sharvin by over 6,000 points to win. He said on his social media, “Many thanks to all the host clubs and sponsors of all events on the Elavonic PGA of Ireland Irish Region circuit for the 2025 season.”

His five wins on the tour were at Thurles Golf Club, Ardglass, Carne, Delgany, and Balmoral, as well as his fourth Irish PGA Championship title, the Brown and Brown Irish Championship, which was held at Monkstown.

“Huge thanks to my two tour caddies, my daughter Katie Thornton and son Ryan, who had a running battle throughout the year. Katie had more wins, but Ryan won the major!”

“To the guys at Athletic Training Club for getting me – sort of back in shape. To @cobragolf @cpg_uki for the new irons and the continued support of @titleistukireland for the clubs/shoes/balls/gloves etc.”

“And most importantly, to Ciara Thornton for allowing me to follow my dream …….. again!”

Since 2016, Simon has featured in the top five places of the Order of Merit, nine times out of ten. He has finished in second place twice, third place once, fourth place twice, and fifth place in 2016, as well as his first places in 2025, 2020, and 2018.
