DOWN and Mayobridge goalkeeper Charlie Smyth has had to extend his stay in America after being asked to meet with the New Orleans Saints.

Charlie has been in the US since the start of the year where he is part of the NFL’s International Player programme which seeks to give athletes from outside the American College system, a chance to win a place on NFL practice squads.

After undergoing two trials in February and March, Charlie had planned to return to Ireland today. But he has been asked to travel to the New Orleans Saint’s training ground for a private work out on Thursday (28 March).

He has changed his flights to Dublin to Sunday morning, March 31.

The International Player Pathway programme offers a chance for players from across the world to go through a series of trials to see if they have the skills to play in the NFL.

Successful participants could be invited to join NFL team’s practice squads in the summer where they will work towards trying to win a place on the full time squad.
