THREE athletes from the Team Torres Brazilian Ju-Jitsu Club in Castlewellan took home medals at the Irish BJJ Open last weekend (23-24 May).

The Irish Open, which took place at the National Indoor Arena in Blanchardstown, Dublin, is one of the most prestigious Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitions in Ireland, and the Team Torres athletes competed against fierce opposition from across the island and beyond over the course of the weekend.

White belt Ronan Ferris won gold, competing as the only five-year-old in the Under 25 Kilos division for five to six year-olds.

Twenty-one-year-old Shea Stratton, also a white belt, overcame four tough opponents in the Adult Under 70 Kilos division (20-30-year-olds) before losing out in the final, taking home silver for Team Torres.

In the Master 2 Under 20 Kilos division, 39-year-old blue belt Franco Notorantino claimed the club’s second gold medal of the weekend.

All three athletes reached their respective finals via submission.
