A 13-YEAR-OLD St Malachy’s High School student has been receiving praise for his decisive actions last Wednesday when an elderly man fell off his bike on the Dundrum Road.

Keon Massey was cycling home after a day of caddying at Royal County Down Golf Club when a fellow cyclist came off his bike.

Keon explained what happened.

“I was on my bike cycling home, a cyclist in front of me came off his bike – he was knocked out,” he said.

“I went over to him and rang the ambulance straight away, then others driving past came over to help.”

As other members of the public came over to assist Keon, the cyclist regained consciousness, and Keon remained with the elderly man until the ambulance arrived two hours later.

“A girl came over with a first aid kit and I bandaged his hand and put a plaster on his nose.

“He (the cyclist) came round again and was talking to me normally, but he didn’t remember what happened, and he thanked me for staying with him,” Keon said.

Keon, who will be going into Year 10 at St Malachy’s High School in September, took the injured cyclist’s phone number and texted him the next day to see if he was ok, and although he suffered a cracked rib and some bruising, he is recovering well.

Mum and dad, Neil and Jennifer, say they are ‘super proud’ of Keon.

“I didn’t realise the extent of what had had happened until he came home, but he was so confident in himself in that situation, so me and his dad are super proud of him,” Jennifer explained.
