Newcastle Blacks 26
Mid Ulster 18
The Newcastle Blacks made a confident start to their Anne Curran Shield campaign with a well-earned victory over Mid Ulster, securing a 26-18 win in the opening game of the competition last week.
Following recent injuries within the squad, the match also marked an important opportunity for U-19 player Maggie to step up, and she did so with a standout performance that belied her years.
The opening quarter set the tone for what would be a competitive contest. Newcastle began with intent, showing composure and patience in possession. Strong defensive pressure and controlled attacking play saw the Blacks edge ahead early, finishing the first quarter 5-3 in front. Defensively, Newcastle worked cohesively to deny Mid Ulster space, forcing turnovers and limiting clear shooting opportunities.
Building on that platform, the second quarter saw Newcastle grow in confidence and consistency. The midcourt began to dictate the tempo, linking defence to attack with speed and accuracy. Maggie’s introduction into the senior setup brought fresh energy, with her movement and decision-making having an immediate impact. Newcastle extended their lead to 11-6 at half-time, a reward for disciplined structure and strong teamwork across the court.
Mid Ulster responded positively after the break, increasing their intensity and applying pressure in both defence and transition. The third quarter proved the most testing for Newcastle, with both teams trading goals and momentum swinging back and forth. Despite this, the Pinks showed maturity and resilience, staying composed and sticking to their game plan. Accurate shooting and strong defensive contests ensured Newcastle maintained their advantage, heading into the final quarter with a 17-13 lead.
The final quarter showcased Newcastle at their best. Fitness, focus and belief came to the fore as the Blacks lifted their intensity and capitalised on their opportunities. Defensively, pressure was relentless, forcing errors and creating crucial turnovers, while the attacking unit showed patience and confidence to convert possession into goals. Newcastle outscored Mid Ulster convincingly in the closing stages, finishing the match as 26-18 winners and sealing an impressive opening Shield win.
