Simon Thornton has admitted to being frustrated at not getting a chance to win the recent Callaway Chrome Tour Open Series Ireland at the Blackrock course in Dundalk.
The Newcastle golfer was in second place on -5 after the first round last Tuesday and was eagerly looking forward to a chance of chasing down the leader, Niall Kearney, on the second day of the two-day event. However, poor weather conditions meant that the tournament organisers decided to end the event after one day’s play and announced that Kearney was the winner.
“Certainly the way I was playing, I enjoyed the first day and I was looking forward to the second day,” Simon said.
“I have had a niggling back injury over the last six weeks. It had been hindering one or two shots. So to shoot five under in the first round was great. I had a little bit of pain in the last few holes when I was putting but bar that I was okay.
“Then the rain came down like I don’t know what. So yeah, I was a little bit frustrated that I couldn’t get back on the golf course to catch Niall. He shot seven under. He is a good golfer and he likes Dundalk. He won the Irish Championship round there, so I knew it would be a hard thing to catch him.”
In the full article Simon goes on to explain how his son and daughter have been caddying for him this season.
