Simon Thornton says that reaching seven under at the most recent PGA Circuit of Ireland event, the Pro Am at Ardglass, was a special achievement on what has been a great start to his season.
In what was his fourth event, Simon recorded his second win as he shot a seven under round of 64, and was two shots clear of Tim Rice from Limerick Golf Club.
The Spa Golf Club head pro explained why shooting seven under was significant. “I was delighted to shoot seven under. We sometimes get to five or six under but seven or eight is a little harder mentally to get to.”
Simon said that the course helped him achieve the low score. “I am delighted with the win. I haven’t played Ardglass for a couple of years, but links golf suits my game. I can control my ball flight and have good distance control to land and let the ball release out. It was a glorious day on a course with views to match the weather. It was hard not to enjoy the day, so I was looking forward to the round.”
He had a magical round in the sun and birdied five holes on the front nine and two on the back with no bogeys.
