THERE will be a temptation in the minds of Down supporters to cast back to 2023 and the Tailteann Cup semi-final when a spectacular first half from Down instigated a demolition job of Laois to propel Down to the Tailteann Cup final.
The Mournemen went on to win the game 8-16 – 2-12, a 22 point success. Laois did score plenty in the second half that day but it was of little concern at the time.
That Down could do similar this time round would appear fanciful thinking. Not only is it a rare occurrence to bang in eight goals in a game but this term Laois appear a rejuvenated outfit under Armagh-native Justin McNulty.
Indeed, Down selector Martin Clarke made it clear at the team’s media event last week that Down are well aware they have a different challenge ahead this time.
He said, “We are under no illusions that, that was a bit of a freak game. The Laois of this year are much improved, even though they have plenty the same players as do we.”
