Tom Crudgington won the highly prestigious Slieve Donard race on Saturday with a record time of 55 minutes and 07 seconds.

The race returned to its original route, which starts at Newcastle Centre and ends at the Donard Park Pavilion. The previous record was held by Seamus Lynch, who completed the course in 2018 with a time of 55 minutes and 14 seconds.

But on Saturday, Newcastle AC’s Tom was the standout performer, finishing almost five minutes ahead of second-place Ashley Crutchley.

The win was also notable as this year marked the 80th anniversary of the race, which has been held every year without interruption since 1945.

Deon McNeilly remains the most successful Slieve Donard race competitor, having won the event nine times. Zac Hanna, last year’s winner, secured his fourth victory in 2023.
