A young Kilkeel motorist lost his life in Monday afternoon’s crash near Clough.

Ryan Cunningham, who was 21, was travelling along the Ballydugan Road, at Tullymurry, when the incident occurred. His passenger, who is also from the area, remains in a serious condition in hospital, whilst two women who had been travelling in another vehicle are also receiving treatment for their injuries.

The air ambulance, paramedics, police and firefighters rushed to the scene. As officers from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit confirm an investigation has been launched, they have also appealed for witnesses or anyone with information which may be of relevance to come forward.

Local people and the emergency services have also been praised for their endeavours at what was, understandably, a traumatic scene. The road, which is the main route between Clough and Downpatrick, reopened yesterday (Tuesday) morning.

Local councillor, Alan Lewis, has extended his condolences to the young man’s family and friends.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death following a road traffic collision on the Ballydugan Road. My heartfelt sympathies and condolences go to the family and loved ones of the person who has lost their life,” he said.

“The sudden loss of life on our roads is always a profound shock, leaving a lasting impact on families and on the wider community.”
