THE National Trust has suspended talks with the local council over its controversial plans to develop a cable car ride and visitor centre on the slopes of Slieve Donard.
The conservation charity, and owner of the mountain, has announced it is ‘pausing our engagement at this time’ with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council over its plans for the highly contentious visitor attraction on the mountainside at Thomas’ Quarry.
Whilst stating it remains ‘open to engage’ with the council and key stake holders, the Trust has said it has ‘consistently stated the need for robust and comprehensive environmental assessments ‘ and until these are received its involvement in the discussions have been stopped.
The Trust’s response was provided after the Mourne Observer made contact about comments made in a letter from regional director Heather Lachlan in which she clarified their position.
