Valley Rangers Reserves won the Wilmor Johnston Memorial Cup

Valley Rangers Reserves manager Samuel Gordon couldn’t have asked for a better send-off last Thursday night as he prepares to manage the Valley Rangers first team next season.

Gordon lifted the Wilmor Johnston Memorial Cup with his players after beating Rathfriland Rangers Reserves on penalties in a dramatic final at Jubilee Park.

Speaking after the match, he said: “Every time we play Rathfriland it’s always hard fought, there’s never much in it. We beat them 1-0 in the league at the start of the season, then drew 0-0 in the return game and it took penalties tonight. But I’m so happy and I’m so proud of all the players, I’m a bit lost for words at the minute.”

Rathfriland Reserves have only lost three league games all season and have stormed to the MUFL Reserve Championship title. The men in white looked comfortable until Zach Annett’s sending off in the 52nd minute, a decision which turned the final on its head.
